I will not take the time to write about the plot and storyline, as you can read this in the book description or in other reviews. Box continues to demonstrate his knack of satisfying long time readers while giving sufficient 'back story' to those new to this series. I did have one minor disappointment, which unfortunately many of the current mystery writers engage in. Using 'Endangered' as an illustration, Box uses most of the narrative laying out a very complex series of characters and events, which is great. However, as I see with some of my other favorite mystery writers, there is a tendency to 'cram' a great deal of facts and events into the final few pages, which always leaves me wanting. As someone that has read the entire Joe Pickett series, I am a loyal reader and can't wait for the next book to be released. But in this case, I would have liked to see Mr. Box use more pages (and depth of discussion) to describe the ending, and tie up all the loose ends. But even with that, I highly recommend 'Endangered'.Tags : Amazon.com: Endangered (A Joe Pickett Novel) (9780399160776): C. J. Box: Books,C. J. Box,Endangered (A Joe Pickett Novel),G.P. Endangered A Joe Pickett Novel C J Box Books Reviews
My favorite Joe Pickett story, and I think one of C.J. Box's best works. Now, I must share some things for Box's editors that I'm sure Joe Pickett would tell them if he could. Some readers care about the realism of the details. An entire flock of sage grouse would not stay on the lek while they were all killed. Sage grouse are more wary during courtship than are many other grouse species. Elk shed their antlers by spring green up, and so couldn't be bull dogged by their antlers. One might run down a bull elk on a snow machine in deep snow, but not with just a few inches of snow in the sagebrush hill country. They would run back in the timber given the chance. Running a snow machine wide open through sagebrush is pretty dangerous -- when a ski snags a stout bush the snow machine stops forward progress much quicker than does the rider. Since illegal outfitter camps are in violation for both State and Federal law, the Forest Service cooperates enthusiastically with game wardens on prosecuting those violations. Through two lengthy processes, RARE I and RARE II, the Forest Service inventoried all roads and wheel tracks going onto the National Forests. If you can follow them in an F-150 pickup, you can see them on an aerial photograph -- specially if they go through timber. There a few, if any, secret places left in Wyoming that you can drive to with motorized transportation. By the way, I've been dreaming about that break in the rock wall my entire life and still haven't found it. I'm happy to observe that Joe Pickett is becoming a better cop and not doing as many dumb things that put him in danger. Loved the book.
I am a fan of C.J. Box and the Joe Pickett series, as demonstrated by the fact that I've read all of them, and bought this one immediately after it's release. If you enjoy stories set in the rural west, and strong descriptions of a wonderful landscapes, you'll enjoy this book and the whole series. I have only one criticism. In this book, as in a a number of the others, the author uses federal land management agents as easy foils to demonstrate the apparently eternal conflict between hapless and venal federal bureaucrats ( who can't be fired and all come from the East) and the the stalwart, honest and intelligent natives of Wyoming. In this book, one of the supporting villains is the member of a federal sage grouse protection team, who exterminates a sage grouse lek, thus getting the story rolling. Permissible yes, but too remedial a solution for a writer of this calibre, particularly when repeatedly used.
I love Wyoming and I love this series of books by author Box. I've read all of this author's offerings - standalone and this series - and he's one author I pre-order every time I see he has another book coming out.
Joe Pickett is always running into bad situations but this time his family is involved. His almost-adoptive daughter April is found dumped alongside the road, beaten badly. And Joe is hellbent on finding out who did this heinous act, meanwhile praying for April's recovery.
Like most of Box's books, there is more than one storyline and the action is very fast-paced. And the bad guys are particularly nasty this time around.
You can read this as a standalone but if you haven't read the Joe Pickett series, do yourself a favor and start at the beginning and savor each one.
This was my first Joe Pickett novel. I did enjoy it and could see that having read previous novels would have given the reader a better background on the characters. Not that that seemed necessary.
It was good but I was disappointed in how suddenly everything was all wrapped up in a simple package. Most of the good people survived with out too many problems. I found this a little too simple. I wondered if previous novels were similar. Sometimes I think authors must get tired of the same protagonist novel after novel and after many books they tend to disappoint.
I had problems believing that April survived without any complications, I also had problems with Nate and how he was able to be in the right place at the right time considering his condition and how he connects with Liv in the time frame and how he was able to call her when she had lost her cell phone etc.
All in all I will try to get the earlier novels and follow this character to see if I like the previous books better. It was good enough to persue that venue
