For as much as I enjoy the Chicagoland series, this book just didn't really do it for me. Chloe Neill's ya series, the Dark Elite, focuses on Lily Parker, a teenage girl who gets sent off to a fancy Chicago boarding school when her parents mysteriously go off on a "research trip." A lot of fishy stuff is going on at the boarding school, what with the weird noises and the mysterious outings her friend Scout keeps taking. Between that and how Lily is being treated by the popular girls at school, things have been tough for her since she joined St. Sophia's. Lily develops a fast friendship with Scout, though, and soon learns that there is a mysterious group of rebel teens with magical abilities lurking around the school at night, trying to keep the school safe from those who would do harm. As much as Lily would like to help, though, she can't without powers of her own to defend herself.
I felt this book was too rushed without enough development and "meat." There was hardly any character development, so we didn't really get to learn much about the characters, and the plot seemed to skip along without any suspense or anything. I was very underwhelmed and am in no hurry to finish the series, but since there are only two more books in the series, I suppose I'll eventually break down and give them a try.

Firespell is the first book in a new young adult series by author Chloe Neill. It centers around the main character, Lily Parker who is sent to boarding school in Chicago when her parents get a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go on an academic sabbatical at a university in Germany. What she thinks will just be two years of a boring, elitist learning environment turns out to be more than she bargained for.

Her suite-mate Scout is more than just a little unusual, she is in fact an Adept - someone gifted with magical abilities who promises to give them up before they corrupt the body and soul. Lily opens the door to this secret world when she follows Scout on one of her mysterious disappearances. She learns the hard way, by getting hit with firespell, just how very dangerous things can get for those in the Dark Elite.

Although it takes a little awhile for the action to pick up, the beginning is anything but boring. Ms. Neill created a framework for this story that can hold for subsequent books in the series. There are plenty of questions that were presented early on - some more subtle than others - that remain unanswered at stories' end, leaving a world of possibility for the direction of future books and for many adventures to come.

Both Lily and Scout are characters that readers can relate to, having been abandoned by their parents and shipped off to a school where they don't quite fit in. And while it took some time to warm up to and connect with Lily, Scout was likable from the very first. Her mischievous and acerbic personality offered a nice contrast to Lily's more even-tempered one.

Firespell is a very fast read with a few surprise twists throw in - especially as pertains to the "tall, dark, and handsome" Reaper, Sebastian Born, whom readers will definitely see in books to come. This book and series should definitely be added to readers "to-read" lists.
I don't like to recap a novel's plot in a review because I feel like the book description does a pretty good job of teasing the story in most instances. However, I will tell you why I really enjoyed both books in the Dark Elite series. I am a huge fan of paranormal romance and action novels - vampires, werewolves, witches, etc... if it falls in one of these categories, then I'm interested in reading it. This includes anything from young adult to more r-rated novels - anything goes. However, as I've expanded my love of reading this genre, I've discovered there are just as many horrible writers as there are great ones in this genre. I have been a fan of Chloe Neill's Chicagoland vampire series for quite some time - in fact, it is definitely one of my favorite series in the genre! (Although those books definitely fall in the more adult category). So earlier this year, I decided to give this young adult series a try, and once again, I was not disappointed. While many paranormal books have similar or overlapping themes, I enjoyed Neill's twist on the world of magic in this series. Also, I appreciate that these novels are truly age appropriate for young adults. I have read a few series before that contained very detailed intimate scenes between high school students in books being billed as appropriate for middle and high school aged readers. While I personally enjoy my fair share of juicy scenes, I wouldn't want my daughter reading them one day when she hits middle school age. Therefore, I appreciate Neill's ability to mix innocent age-appropriate romance and flirtations in with the action of these novels' plot. Yet, while these books are certainly age appropriate for young adults, they are not written in a flighty high school tone which would turn off adults. On the contrary, I find a lot of adults (like myself) still really enjoy young adult fiction, and if that's the case, you will not be disappointed in this series. Now if you like a little more spice in your novels... then definitely check out her Chicagoland vampire series! Also, please note this review applies to both the first and second book in the Dark Elite series (Firespell and Hexbound) so I will be posting the same review under both titles. I do recommend reading the stories in book order (i.e. Firespell then Hexbound).
I enjoyed this book. I usually do like work by this author, and I was not disappointed this time. It is typical in many ways for the young adult genre, so readers should be ready for teenage behavior from the characters. That being said, this author is good at creating characters with interesting personalities, and if you like snark like I do, then this author's work is for you. I personally only read young adult books occasionally, but if you are or know an actual young adult that likes to read, I do recommend this book.
