Here's a book I read - over and over - as a kid. I remember it well enough that I was able to order it here 35 - 40 years after I last saw it, so it etched itself in my brain. The story of a kid living at a boarding house in San Francisco, Black and Blue Magic is a complex and realistic treatment of something very popular today: superpowers. What would you do if you could suddenly fly? I mean, in the movies you pick up a snazzy custom-fit spandex outfit at the local superhero clubhouse then begin flying around and busting criminals with or without the help of the local police - but come on, is that how it would be in reality? Black and Blue Magic goes into some of the mundane questions ("How do I get grass stains out of the old curtains I use as my flying costume?") and gets them right. There's a wealth of interesting characters - not least the provider of the superpowers themselves. This is a book for pre-teens, but I think any age will find it fascinating. Enjoy!

Harry Houdini Marco takes us all on a journey of our dreams---the ability to fly (with all its ups and downs). I have read this book to elementary students for many, many years, and it never gets old!
I remember this book from my childhood - it was a firm favorite then and now 40 years on - it's been a delight to rediscover it! Highly recommend for the young teen and the young at heart -)
I loved this book as a boy, and I still reread it every few years. I recently bought a new copy to pass on to my 12-year-old nephew. The book takes the dream of flight and makes it real for a young fatherless boy who, through the course of the story, also grows into a young man.

Zilpha Keatley Snyder came and spoke to my class in 5th grade, and that's one of my strongest memories from elementary school.
As so many others have written, Black and Blue Magic was one of, if not actually, the first book I chose to read on my own as my 8 or 9 year old self. I was fortunate in that I had two older brothers so our book case was filled with age appropriate books. I'll never forget the faded blue cloth cover of our hardback edition. With the slightly flaking and cracked gold embossed letters, the old volume looked like it belonged in the Ancient Spells section of a real magic shop.

I too, brought my search for this childhood remembrance to and I bought a second (or third or fourth) hand copy from a third party seller. At the time (2007) the book did not seem to be in print anywhere. I was grateful to get my well used copy.

I dove right in the minute the wrapping paper came off and it was truly as though I stepped back in time. I finished quite a bit faster than I did back in the 60's, but the feeling of satisfaction from a book well read was like Deja vu. I could smell the musky scent of our hand built oak book case and all the old, dusty tomes that filled it.

In my correspondence with Zilpha Keatley Snyder, the author, I expressed my desire to see our Harry fly on the big screen. Her response "It's good to hear that Black and Blue Magic has meant so much to you. I too have long thought that it could make a great film" gives me hope that one day our Harry will also fly into the imaginations of today's children.

Today's reader might not be as impressed with the book, when you consider eight Harry Potter films being drilled into their young minds in theater, television and hi definition Blu-Ray DVD, but the adventure is there for all who seek it. And for all the yesterdays, todays and tomorrows it will always find a warm place in the heart of youth.
46%. That's when the first magic happens, unless you count a daydream. The magic begins almost halfway through the book. Hints and foreshadowing, character development and establishment of conflict are all in place before the deus ex machina is introduced. I personally think this book is better for it, the foundation is what makes Harry's story worth reading. But I recognize that 21 century literature gets going more quickly than this. If you start Black and Blue Magic be prepared to wait before the fantasy gets going.
I loved this story as a kid in grade school (68-76)... I only remembered the bits about his first flight and even wonder if I had read an abridged version of the story. Anyway, it is way better than I remembered and still a joy to read at age 53. I love re-reading favorite childhood stories and this one is now added to my re-read every so often list!
It was just as good as when I read it in Junior High. I found this book because I was trying to remember where I read, "Mog will not remove a curse, Till Better triumphs over worst'. This story brought back many old memories, as rereading a book will do, and I finished it this time with the same feelings as I did when I was 12 - a great story.
